Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CLAUDE.md and Claude custom instructions.

What is CLAUDE.md?

CLAUDE.md is a custom instruction file that Claude reads before every conversation. It tells Claude who you are, how you work, what tone to use, and what kind of output you need — so you stop re-explaining yourself every time you open a new chat.

Think of it as a permanent briefing for your AI assistant. Once it's set, Claude knows your role, your preferences, and your standards without you having to repeat them.

How do I create a CLAUDE.md file?

Use the free generator above. Describe your role and how you use Claude — the generator builds a structured, scored CLAUDE.md in under two minutes. No technical knowledge needed.

If you already have a CLAUDE.md, use the "Optimize Existing" tab. Paste your current file, and you'll get a quality score plus a rewritten version with specific improvements.

Where do I put my CLAUDE.md?

Easiest: claude.ai Projects. Go to claude.ai → Projects → open or create a project → click "Set project instructions" → paste your CLAUDE.md contents. Claude will use it for every conversation in that project automatically.

Desktop app: Open Settings → "Claude instructions" → paste. Applies to every new conversation.

Quick option: Paste it at the start of any conversation. Claude will follow it for that chat.

Why does Claude keep ignoring my instructions?

Claude ignores instructions when they are too vague, too long, or buried in the conversation. The fix is a well-structured CLAUDE.md placed in your project instructions — it's specific, loaded before every chat, and far harder for Claude to miss than a mid-conversation instruction.

After generating your CLAUDE.md here, score it: anything under 70 usually has missing specificity or unclear output format — both fixable in under five minutes.

What's the difference between CLAUDE.md and a system prompt?

CLAUDE.md is a plain-text file that holds your personal system prompt — the persistent context Claude reads before every conversation. "System prompt" is the broader technical term; CLAUDE.md is the file convention used in Claude Projects and the Claude desktop app.

CoworKit generates a CLAUDE.md formatted for direct use in claude.ai Projects, where it has the most impact.

Does this work for non-developers?

Yes — CoworKit is built for everyday Claude users, not developers. Writers, founders, consultants, researchers, marketers, and students all use it. You describe your work in plain language; the tool handles structure, scoring, and format.

Is CoworKit free?

Yes. Both the "Create New" and "Optimize Existing" tabs are completely free. No account, no credit card, no limit on generations.
